Gold Valuation Calculator: Methodology and Unit Reference

The gold value calculator multiplies the current international gold spot price (in MYR per gram) by the entered weight and applies a purity multiplier to determine the pure gold content value. The spot price is sourced from LBMA/COMEX data and converted using the prevailing USD/MYR exchange rate. Three weight units are supported: gram (the metric standard used in Malaysian retail gold shops), tola (11.6638 grams, used by South Asian jewellers), and troy ounce (31.1035 grams, the international commodity quotation standard).

Purity factors range from 0.999 (24K — 99.9% pure gold) to 0.375 (9K — 37.5% pure gold). The most traded purities in Malaysia are 999 (24K) for investment bars and 916 (22K) for traditional jewellery. The calculator output represents the raw gold content value at the spot price. Actual retail prices include additional costs: making charges (10%–30% for jewellery craftsmanship), dealer premiums (2%–5% for bars), and applicable SST (6% on non-exempt gold products).

Gold Calculator Operation Steps

Step-by-Step Calculation Process

  1. Enter Weight: Input the gold weight as a decimal number. The calculator accepts values from 0.01 to 99,999 units.
  2. Select Unit: Choose the measurement unit. Gram (standard metric), Tola (11.6638 grams — used by South Asian jewellers in Malaysia), or Troy Ounce (31.1035 grams — the international commodity quotation standard).
  3. Choose Purity: Select the karat grade. The calculator applies the purity multiplier: 24K (0.999), 22K (0.916), 18K (0.750), 14K (0.585), or 9K (0.375).
  4. Read Result: The output displays the estimated gold content value in MYR. Formula: (Weight in grams) × (MYR price per gram of 24K gold) × (Purity factor) = Value in MYR.

Calculation Limitations

  • Output reflects the gold content value at the international spot price. Retail transaction prices differ.
  • Making charges for jewellery (10%–30% above gold content value) are not included in the calculation.
  • Dealer premiums for investment bars (2%–5% above spot) are not included.
  • Buyback prices at gold shops are 1%–5% below spot due to dealer margins.
  • SST at 6% applies to certain gold products and is not factored into the calculator output.

Gold Calculator Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator derive the gold price?
The calculator retrieves the international gold spot price in USD per troy ounce, converts it to MYR using the current USD/MYR exchange rate, then divides by 31.1035 to obtain the MYR price per gram. This base price is multiplied by the entered weight (converted to grams) and the selected purity factor to produce the estimated value.
What is the difference between a gram and a tola in gold measurement?
A gram is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). A tola is a traditional South Asian unit of mass equal to 11.6638 grams (defined as 3/8 of a troy ounce). Tola remains the standard weight unit at Indian and Pakistani jewellery shops in Malaysia, while gram is used at Malay and Chinese gold shops and in bank gold savings accounts.
Why is 916 gold the standard for jewellery in Malaysia?
916 gold (22 karat) contains 91.6% pure gold alloyed with 8.4% silver, copper, and zinc. The alloy metals increase the Vickers hardness from approximately 25 HV (pure gold) to 60–90 HV, making the material resistant to scratching, bending, and deformation during daily wear. Pure 999 gold is too soft for jewellery — it deforms under light pressure. The 916 alloy retains the warm yellow colour valued in Malay and Indian jewellery traditions while providing the structural integrity required for rings, bangles, and necklaces.
